Making Meditation a Part of Everyday Life: “It’s Simply My Routine”

Making Meditation a Part of Everyday Life:

Today, I received a touching message from someone participating in Wildmind’s 28 Day Meditation Challenge. While it’s too late to join the current one, we have more challenges scheduled throughout the year.

The message beautifully illustrates how a simple phrase can transform your approach to meditation, and significantly shift your identity and life. (I’ve edited out some personal details for privacy.)

This person shared that they’ve been meditating more consistently for nearly a year after dabbling in it for 30 years. They described experiencing a major breakthrough during the 28-day challenge.

Finding the time to meditate used to be a struggle for them. However, adopting the mantra, “I meditate every day; it’s just what I do; it’s who I am,” has placed meditation at the core of their daily routine. Sometimes, their sessions last only five minutes, but they now feel a natural urge to meditate, similar to the way they used to feel about running when they were younger. Their body and mind remind them to meditate each day.

To fit meditation into their busy schedule, they’ve expanded their practice beyond just sitting at home. They now incorporate walking meditation on their commutes, pause for short sessions on park benches, or even take a moment while on a walk with friends. Even if it’s just for five or ten minutes, they make sure not to miss a day. This new habit has helped them open up to friends about their practice, leading to acceptance and support from those around them. Their friends have noticed positive changes in their attitude and overall health.

The transformation lies in seeing meditation as something they simply do every day, bringing a sense of happiness and fulfillment.

The phrase, “I meditate every day; it’s just what I do; it’s part of who I am,” helped me switch from being an “almost daily” meditator to a consistent one. These affirmations help reshape our self-perception, removing the need for willpower to maintain our practice. Just like brushing your teeth, meditating daily becomes automatic.

Many thanks for your encouragement and support.
