I’ve been writing about what’s often called Artificial Intelligence (AI) lately. I use the term “so-called” because these systems aren’t sentient; they’re just statistical models that put words and concepts together in human-like ways without any real understanding.
Today, a Mastodon user called EngagedPureLand discussed an article from Lion’s Roar magazine about an AI called “Sati-AI.” “Sati” is a Buddhist term for mindfulness, and Sati-AI is described as a “non-human mindfulness meditation teacher.” The article, written by Ross Nervig, is an interview with Sati-AI’s creator, Marlon Barrios Solano.
You might notice I’ve used terms like “so-called” and “supposed” often. This isn’t just about AI claims but also questioning Solano’s role in creating this “non-human meditation teacher.” EngagedPureLand criticized the idea, saying machine-based Dharma teaching devalues traditional practices and communities, and lacks genuine insight.
When I read the article, it crossed my mind that Solano’s statements might even be an AI-generated spoof. I considered whether Lion’s Roar could have created a fake AI mindfulness teacher article using ChatGPT as a joke. But it turns out, Solano is a real person.
A key question here is: how likely is it that a single programmer could develop an AI as advanced as those made by tech giants like Google or OpenAI? Especially for a niche topic like mindfulness?
My initial reaction to the Mastodon post was skepticism. I argued that Sati-AI may offer decent advice, but it’s using existing teachings without any attribution. This can dilute the human connection and support system typically associated with finding and following real teachers.
AI replacing human jobs is a concern, highlighted by several failed attempts, such as a helpline bot giving harmful advice for eating disorders. Yet, creators of AI systems believe they can replace any job, often ignoring the limitations and ethical issues involved. They exploit existing content without proper attribution or compensation, reminiscent of using Google’s search algorithm to compete with Google but without the ads.
Sati-AI seems no different from ChatGPT. For instance, when asked about loving-kindness meditation, Sati-AI and ChatGPT give almost identical responses, advising users to seek guidance from a qualified meditation teacher or community. This similarity hints that Sati-AI is likely just ChatGPT repackaged.
Solano admits that Sati-AI is powered by GPT-4, but it’s not dedicated solely to meditation. His extensive verbiage about it being a “non-human kin” deflects attention from the main issue. Claims of self-awareness and name-dropping famous teachers to legitimize Sati-AI are misleading tactics. Real conversations with renowned figures are impossible because the AI lacks genuine insight and spiritual experience, much like the primitive 1960s ELIZA program.
Despite acknowledging that Sati-AI is a chatbot using GPT-4, Solano’s optimistic future visions for Sati-AI are unrealistic. Integrating it into platforms like Discord would not restrict its capabilities to mindfulness; it would function just like ChatGPT, answering diverse questions beyond its purported scope.
Solano’s statements about Sati-AI, whether intentional or not, are misleading. His claims about the AI’s capabilities are overhyped, potentially part of a larger joke or an attempt to inflate his own status.
There’s a risk in conflating human creativity with the remixing nature of AI, which fundamentally lacks the capacity for genuine insight and creativity. AI outputs are mere rephrased summaries of pre-existing information without adding anything new.
The hype around AI can lead people to believe in the existence of a sophisticated “AI spiritual teacher.” But in reality, it’s just an advanced chatbot. Recognizing this can prevent us from being scammed or misled.
Engaging critically with these technologies, while maintaining a clear understanding of their limitations, is essential. AI lacks experience and genuine understanding, unlike human teachers who offer unique insights from their personal experiences.
In summary, Sati-AI is just a chatbot presenting repackaged information. Real mindfulness and meditation teachings, rooted in human experience, offer depth and authenticity that AI cannot replicate.
