Wildmind is offering an online course called “The Great Mystery of Being: A Practical Introduction to the Experience of Non-Self,” starting on Wednesday, September 20th. One of the Buddha’s profound insights is that our sense of self is a burden, but it’s possible to let go of this burden.
The six element practice is a poetic and reflective way to understand impermanence, interconnectedness, and especially the concept of non-self. This practice helps us examine what we consider to be “us” and “ours,” teaching us that nothing in our mind or body truly belongs to us. The practice involves a close analysis of the notion of “us” to whom anything might belong, by examining each “element” that makes up the body and mind.
Over the six-week course, we will explore each of these elements one by one, revealing that everything we consider to be “us” is actually borrowed from the outside world. Through this process, the illusion of having a separate and permanent self dissolves. We stop worrying about whether our perceived self is good enough, worthy enough, or capable of awakening. Instead, we come to understand that our “self” is just a collection of constantly changing experiences, leading to a deep sense of release, relief, and confidence.
Although the six weeks won’t necessarily lead to complete awakening, you will likely experience a significant shift in how you view yourself, giving you a taste of liberation.
